Your Croatia trip probably runs one of two ways: fly into Zagreb and work south, or land in Dubrovnik and head north by coast. Either way you cross a country with a very long coastline, a lot of islands and a few quiet stretches. Here is one seven-day route from India, with what your phone needs at each leg.
The simplest setup for Croatia is a single Croatia eSIM installed at home. One plan covers the airports, the coast, the islands and the ferries between them.
First, what an eSIM is
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone, so there is no small plastic card to swap. People call it an eSIM card or an e sim, but nothing physical arrives. You buy an eSIM online, scan a QR code and the plan waits on your phone. Check your handset on the eSIM compatible device list. If it is not there, a physical travel SIM is available for phones without eSIM support.
The route, leg by leg
Day 1: landing in Zagreb
Turn airplane mode off at Franjo Tudjman Airport, pick the Croatia eSIM as your data line, and wait about a minute. You need it for the airport bus into town and for hotel directions. Most of Zagreb's old town is a short walk, so maps matter more than anything else here.
Days 2 to 3: Plitvice Lakes
The lakes sit in a forested national park between Zagreb and the coast. Coverage is reliable around the entrances, but patchy along the farther boardwalks. Download the park map and your timed ticket before you walk in.
Days 4 to 5: Split and the ferry to Hvar
Split is a proper city with strong coverage. The ferry to Hvar stays near the coast for most of the crossing, so your eSIM works for much of the trip. Save your ferry ticket as a screenshot to be safe. On Hvar, restaurant bookings and taxi calls make this the heaviest data day.
Days 6 to 7: Dubrovnik
The old walled city is a maze of narrow lanes, so offline maps help. City-wall tickets and the cable car both run from QR codes, so keep your data on and your battery charged.
What data you will use
| Leg | What the phone does | Data weight |
|---|---|---|
| Zagreb city days | Maps, trams, restaurant searches | Light |
| Plitvice | Ticket QR code, offline map, photos | Light, with downloads done on wifi |
| Split and Hvar | Ferry tickets, taxis, bookings, social posts | Medium to heavy |
| Dubrovnik | Wall and cable car QR codes, maps | Medium |
For actual figures, use our guide on how much data you need for a week abroad. A seven-day Croatia trip with regular maps and photos sits in the middle of that range.
Going beyond Croatia
Many Indian travellers add Slovenia, Italy or Hungary. If the route crosses a border, a regional plan is simpler. The Europe plan covering 33 countries is the one to check, and the country list on its page tells you whether your stops are in. The differences are covered in regional against single-country plans. A ferry to Italy crosses open water, so see how an eSIM works on a ferry.
Setting up before you leave India
Buy the plan
Open the Croatia page, pick the days and data, and pay. The QR code arrives by email.
Install on home wifi
Show the QR code on a laptop and scan it with your phone, following the installation guide. A new line appears in your mobile settings.
Switch on after landing
Pick the Croatia line as your data line when the plane lands. Bars appear within a minute.
The short version
One Croatia eSIM covers airports, coast and ferries. Download park maps and tickets on wifi, and choose a regional plan only if you cross a border.
