Before you buy

What is an eSIM and how does it work?

Quick answer

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone. Instead of putting in a plastic card, you scan a QR code and the plan downloads to your phone in a few minutes.

If your phone is from the last few years, it probably has an eSIM already. A travel eSIM lets you get mobile data abroad without a new SIM card or a shop visit.

How a travel eSIM works

  1. You buy a data plan for the country you are visiting.
  2. We email you a QR code within seconds.
  3. You scan it on Wi-Fi in India, a day or two before you fly.
  4. When you land, you turn the eSIM on and your data starts.

Why Indian travellers like it

  • Your Indian SIM stays in your phone. Nothing to take out or lose.
  • Ready before you land. No airport counter and no passport copies.
  • Your plan starts when you arrive. The days count from the moment the eSIM first connects at your destination.

My phone has no eSIM. What now?

Some phones sold in India do not have an eSIM. You can still travel with Olysim: order the same plan as a physical SIM card and we deliver it to your home.

Common questions

Is an eSIM the same as a normal SIM?

It does the same job, but it is built into the phone. You download the plan instead of putting in a card.

Can I use an eSIM and my normal SIM together?

Yes. Most eSIM phones are dual SIM, so you can keep your normal SIM on and use the eSIM for data.

Do I need internet to install an eSIM?

Yes. Use Wi-Fi when you scan the QR code. After that, the eSIM gives you data at your destination.
