Short answer
Yes. You can buy an eSIM online at the airport, install it on terminal wifi and board with it ready. Allow about 15 minutes. You need a phone that supports eSIM, a working wifi login and a second screen to show the QR code.
You are at Terminal 3 in Delhi, check-in is done, security is done, and you have just realised you have no data plan for the other end. Do not worry. Buying a travel eSIM takes less time than the queue at the coffee counter. Here is the sequence, in the order it works.
First, check your phone can take an eSIM
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone, so there is no small plastic card to swap. People call it an eSIM card or an e sim, but nothing physical arrives. Not every phone has the feature. Look up your handset on the eSIM compatible device list before you pay for anything. If it is not on the list, a physical travel SIM is available for phones without eSIM support.
The airport sequence
3 hours to go: connect to wifi
Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru airports all offer free wifi, usually through a login page that sends an OTP to your mobile. Do this first. Tests of the connection by loading a web page take ten seconds and save you trouble later.
2 hours 45 minutes: pick the plan
Open your destination page from the plans list. Check the days and the data size, then buy. For several countries, choose a regional plan, as explained in our regional against single-country guide.
2 hours 30 minutes: install
The QR code arrives by email. A phone cannot scan its own screen, so open the email on a laptop or tablet, or ask a travelling companion to show it. Follow the installation guide. A new line then appears in your mobile settings.
At the gate: leave it switched off
Name the line with the country, and leave it off until you land. Check the data line again once the wheels touch down.
The minute you land
Turn airplane mode off, choose the new eSIM as your data line and wait about a minute for signal bars.
What can slow you down
| Hitch | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wifi login wants an OTP and none arrives | Ask at the help desk, or use your own mobile data for the install |
| Wifi is slow at the far gates | Walk near a seating hub, where signal is stronger |
| No second screen for the QR code | Ask support for the manual install details |
| Phone shows no Add eSIM option | Your phone may not support eSIM, so choose a physical SIM |
Buy early in the wait, not at boarding call. Installing takes minutes, and a rushed scan is the usual cause of a failed install.
Is it worth waiting until you land instead?
You can, but buying at the airport at home costs you nothing extra and avoids a queue abroad. We cover the trade-off in when to install your eSIM. If a connection does not appear after landing, work through the not-working checklist.
The short version
Wifi first, plan second, install third, switch on when you land. Fifteen minutes at the gate gets you a working plan on arrival.
