Which eSIM is best for a Turkey trip from India?

You land at Istanbul Airport after a long flight from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. You want maps, a cab and a message to your family within minutes. This guide shows how to have that ready before you leave home.

The best eSIM for Turkey is one you install before you fly, with enough data for your days and a plan that matches your trip length. An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone, so there is no small plastic card to swap. You scan a code, and your phone gets a second line for mobile data.

The short answer: pick a Turkey data plan sized to your days, install it at home on Wi-Fi, and switch it on when you land. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone as it is. See current plans on our eSIM plans page, where prices start from a low figure for your location.

What is a travel eSIM, in plain words?

A travel eSIM is a data plan for the country you are visiting. You buy it online, and you get a QR code, which is a small square picture your phone can scan. Scanning it adds the plan to your phone in about two minutes.

Your phone then holds two lines. One is your Airtel, Jio or Vi number. The other is your travel eSIM, which gives you mobile data in Turkey. You use the data line for Google Maps, WhatsApp, Uber, Instagram and bookings.

For a longer introduction, read our guide on when to install your travel eSIM.

How much data do you need in Turkey?

Most travellers use between 500 MB and 1.5 GB a day. The amount depends on what you do on your phone. Here is a rough guide:

  • Light use (about 500 MB a day): maps, messages, a few photos and booking checks.
  • Medium use (about 1 GB a day): the above, plus Instagram stories, cab apps and some video.
  • Heavy use (1.5 GB or more a day): video calls home, reels, music streaming and working from your phone.

So a 7-day trip often fits a plan of 5 to 10 GB. If you plan to share data with a partner or friend, go one size up. Our guide on how much data you need for a week abroad has a longer breakdown by app.

eSIM, physical SIM or roaming pack: how do they compare?

You have a few ways to stay online in Turkey. Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom all sell tourist SIMs at airports and city shops. Indian operators also sell international packs. Here is how the main choices differ.

Olysim eSIMOnline, from homeAs you landPhones that support eSIM
Olysim physical SIMOnline, delivered to youAfter you place it in your phonePhones without eSIM

To compare cost, open the international pack page in your Airtel, Jio or Vi app. Note the price per day and the data included. Then check the plan price on our plans page for the same number of days. Most travellers find the eSIM gives more data for each rupee spent.

Does your phone work with an eSIM?

Many newer phones do. iPhones from the XS and XR onwards support eSIM. Several Google Pixel and Samsung models do too, though the version sold in India can differ from the one sold abroad.

Check your exact model on our eSIM compatible device list before you buy. If your phone is not on it, choose a physical SIM instead. It is a small plastic card that fits the SIM tray, and it gives you the same Turkey data.

How do you set up your Turkey eSIM, step by step?

Do this at home, a few days before your flight, while you have good Wi-Fi.

  1. Buy your Turkey plan online and open the email with your QR code.
  2. Connect your phone to home Wi-Fi.
  3. Open Settings and find the option to add an eSIM (on iPhone, look under Mobile Data).
  4. Scan the QR code from the email, or from a second screen.
  5. Name the new line "Turkey" so you can find it easily.
  6. Keep the eSIM line switched off until you land.

On the plane, or at the airport after you land, turn the Turkey line on. Set it as the line for mobile data. Switch on data roaming for that line only. Within a minute, you should see signal bars and the name of a Turkish network.

What will you use your data for in Turkey?

Getting from the airport into Istanbul

Istanbul has two main airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, far from the old city. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side. With data on, you can check your route in Google Maps, book a ride in Uber or BiTaksi, and message your hotel about arrival time.

Cappadocia and the balloon mornings

Most visitors reach Cappadocia through Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) airport. In Göreme, your phone helps with sunrise balloon booking confirmations, pickup messages and photo uploads. Signal in remote valleys can be weaker on any network, so download offline maps for the trail days.

Antalya, Pamukkale and the coast

Antalya Airport (AYT) is the usual gateway for beach holidays and day trips to Pamukkale. Data helps you translate menus with Google Translate, check bus times and share live location with family back in India.

Staying in touch with home

WhatsApp calls and video chats run on your data line. A short video call to family uses a few hundred MB, so keep an eye on usage in Settings. Hotel Wi-Fi is handy for long calls and big downloads.

How do you pick the right plan size?

  • Count your days. Match the plan length to your trip, from landing day to the day you fly home.
  • Add a buffer. Pick a plan with about 20% more data than you expect to use.
  • Think about your group. If you will share data from your phone, choose a larger plan.
  • Check your phone. Confirm eSIM support first, or order the physical SIM.

Frequent travellers can also collect cashback on each purchase. Read how it works in our loyalty program guide.

What if your eSIM does not connect after landing?

Most issues take under a minute to fix. First, confirm the Turkey line is on and chosen for mobile data. Second, switch on data roaming for that line. Third, restart your phone. Ready for Turkey?

A Turkey eSIM gives you maps, rides, translation and family chats from the moment you land. Pick a plan that matches your days, install it at home, and switch it on at the airport. Your trip starts the moment you walk out of arrivals.
