Germany trips from India come in very different shapes. Some travellers stay in Munich for a week, others take a train from Frankfurt to Paris and Amsterdam, and students settle in for months. The best eSIM depends on which of these is you, and the wrong pick means buying a second plan at a border.
If Germany is your only country, a Germany eSIM installed at home is the simplest fit. If you cross borders, a regional plan is the better pick.
First, what an eSIM is
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone, so there is no small plastic card to swap. People call it an eSIM card or an e sim, but nothing physical arrives. You buy an eSIM online, scan a QR code at home and the plan waits on your phone. Check your handset on the eSIM compatible device list. A physical travel SIM is available for phones without eSIM support.
The right plan for each kind of traveller
A family on a week in Bavaria
Land at Munich, take the S-Bahn into the city and drive out to Neuschwanstein. A single Germany plan covers all of it. Castle tickets and the DB Navigator train app both run on QR codes, so keep data on and screenshot tickets. Mountain roads near the Alps can lose signal, so download offline maps.
Someone on a rail route across Europe
A route such as Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam crosses two borders in a week. The Europe plan covering 33 countries keeps one QR code working on all three legs. Check the country list on its page against your stops. The difference between the two plan types is set out in regional against single-country plans.
A business traveller at a trade fair
Messe Frankfurt, Messe Munich and Dusseldorf host large fairs where hall wifi is crowded. Your own eSIM gives you a line for video calls and hotel bookings. Choose a larger data size if you work on a laptop, and read how to share it in sharing eSIM data by hotspot.
A student or someone staying a month or more
Pick the longest validity on the Germany page and a data size that matches your daily use. Our guide on how much data you need for a week abroad gives per-activity figures to scale up.
The choices side by side
| Your trip | Plan to pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Germany only | Germany eSIM | One country, one install |
| Germany plus nearby countries | Europe regional plan | Covers each border on one QR code |
| Germany with a transit stop in the Gulf | Germany plan, plus a stopover plan if needed | See the layover guide below |
If you change planes on the way, read using an eSIM on a layover.
Setting up at home
Buy the plan
Pick the days and data on the Germany page. The QR code arrives by email.
Install on home wifi
Scan the code from a laptop, following the installation guide. A new line appears in your mobile settings.
Switch on after landing
Pick the Germany line for data at Frankfurt or Munich airport, then wait about a minute for signal.
The short version
One country means a Germany plan. Several countries mean a regional plan that lists every stop. Install either at home, and download offline maps before Alpine drives.
