If you fly out of India a few times a year, whether for work, weddings or weekend trips to Dubai, you are probably buying a fresh eSIM each time. What many travellers do not realise is that these purchases can quietly add up to real savings through loyalty cashback, if you know how it actually works. Quick answer: eSIM loyalty cashback is credit you earn each time you buy a plan, which builds up in your account and can be applied to future purchases. The more you travel and buy through the same account, the more this credit adds up over time, making it most useful for people who fly several times a year. How loyalty cashback actually works Every time you buy an eSIM plan through a loyalty program, a portion of what you spend comes back to you as credit, added to your account rather than paid out separately. This credit usually goes toward your next purchase, not into your bank account directly. Think of it less like a one-time discount and more like a running balance that grows every time you fly. A trip to Hong Kong this quarter and a trip to Dubai next quarter both add to the same pool, rather than each starting over. Why this matters more for frequent flyers than occasional travellers If you travel abroad once a year, loyalty cashback is a modest bonus, since the credit sits unused for months between trips. If you travel every couple of months, the same credit keeps compounding, and you end up effectively paying less for each eSIM than the sticker price suggests. This is different from an Airtel, Jio or Vi international roaming pack, which resets completely with every trip and offers no ongoing reward for buying again. Occasional traveller vs frequent traveller: how the savings compare Question Travels once a year Travels several times a year Does cashback still add up Slowly, with gaps between each credit Steadily, with each trip adding to the balance Risk of credit expiring unused Higher, if the next trip is far off Lower, since credit gets used sooner Best savings strategy Combine with a one-time discount instead Join the loyalty program and keep using the same account A practical way to think about it across a year of travel Picture a year with four trips out of India, say to Vietnam, Dubai, Hungary and South Korea. Each eSIM purchase adds cashback to your account, so by the time you book your fourth trip, you likely already have credit sitting there from the first three. Applying that credit at checkout on your fourth purchase lowers what you actually pay, on top of whatever you are already saving by skipping an Airtel, Jio or Vi roaming pack for each trip. Getting the most out of your loyalty cashback A few simple habits make sure you actually benefit from the cashback you earn, rather than letting it sit forgotten: Always buy through the same account, so your credit keeps building instead of resetting. Check your loyalty program balance before every new trip, before you buy a plan. Note any expiry attached to your credit, so you use it before it lapses. Still pick your eSIM plan based on your trip's actual data needs first, then apply the credit at checkout. Choosing the right plan still comes first Loyalty cashback is a saving on top of your purchase, not a reason to change which plan you buy. Whether your next destination is a single country or a multi-country route through Europe, our guide on how much data you need for a week abroad can help you pick the right size first. A Europe eSIM plan covering multiple countries still earns cashback the same way a single-country plan does, so it is worth checking whether a regional plan suits your route better. The more you fly out of India and buy through the same account, the more loyalty cashback works in your favour.
